IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT PROJECT AUDIENCE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE DECEMBER 21, 2009 Thanks to everyone who either applied to serve on the Project Audience Oversight Committee or seriously considered applying. We recognize it is a significant commitment to consider. Indeed, several organizations contacted us and staff at the Mellon Foundation in recent days to say that they were very interested in participating, but did not apply due to the time demands. We write today because we have just learned of some organizational changes at The Mellon Foundation that open up possibilities of our achieving the goals of Project Audience in ways that may make smaller demands on the time and commitment of those involved. A small group of us from the Project Audience bridge committee will be meeting with Mellon in January to discuss these new ways of moving forward in more detail. If you have applied to serve on the Oversight Committee, we thank you and will hold on to those applications. Regarding the changes at Mellon, members of the Project Audience Community may remember that the Foundation has supported Project Audience out of both the Performing Arts Program and the Research in Information Technology (RIT) Program. As part of the changes at Mellon, the RIT Program will be merged into the Scholarly Communications program. According to an email of December 18th from Donald J. Waters, the program officer for the Scholarly Communications program, “Ira Fuchs, who founded the RIT program at the Foundation in 2000, and Christopher Mackie, will both be leaving the Foundation.” As this change is made, the Foundation remains committed to the goals of Project Audience, namely the development of collaborative marketing strategies and tools aimed at developing audiences for the arts and increasing arts demand and participation. Again, this transition opens up new possibilities and provides us with the opportunity to consider additional strategies for achieving the goals of Project Audience. The bottom line is that Project Audience will continue to move forward with a shape that will be further defined through our discussions with Mellon and our ongoing conversations with you. We thank you for all your commitment to Project Audience. Please continue to stay involved. We will provide more information once we have met with the Foundation.
